Chapter Twelve

The next morning I was at Lisa’s house bright and early. I got several hugs from each of her parents, who told me how pleased they were that I was finally getting over my grief and moving forward again. I assumed that was what Lisa had told her parents to explain my absence over the past few months, so I went along with it. Lisa’s Dad loaded her luggage into the back of my SUV, then offered us some money, which nearly brought me to tears. Lisa’s folks worked very hard for what they had and while they certainly weren’t poor, they weren’t rich, either.

“That’s very generous of you, Mr. Gold,” I said. “But Aunt Bets left me a little something. We’ll be okay.”

“Well, if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask,” he said, giving me one last hug. “We’ll be glad to do as much as we can.” I gave him a kiss on the cheek for that.

When we finally got in the car and pulled away, I noticed that Lisa seemed subdued. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Having second thoughts?”

“No, not at all,” she said. “It’s just that I hadn’t given any thought to money, and I should have. I have a little saved up, and my folks gave me some money last night. But it won’t last forever. I guess I can get a job in Salmon Creek though, right?”

I pulled the car over to the side of the road and put it in park, glad that I’d told Cord I’d be a bit longer this time so I didn’t have to worry about the clock. “Remember when I told you yesterday that my inheritance was more than I’d thought?”

“Yeah,” Lisa said, frowning in confusion as she watched the traffic pass by.

“Okay, brace yourself,” I warned.

Lisa’s eyes widened in surprise. “I’m braced.”

“I now own a number of businesses, a bunch of real estate, and somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion dollars in liquid assets.”

“You. Are. Kidding me,” Lisa said, her voice getting higher with each word. “Right?”

“Not even a little bit,” I said, grinning. “Money is the absolute last thing either of us needs to worry about, ever.” I saw the expression growing on her face, and knew what it meant. “And, you are now my official assistant, a position that pays very well.”

“I’m not sure I like the idea of getting paid to be your friend,” she said.

“I’m not going to pay you to be my friend,” I said. “But I will pay you to be my assistant.”

“I want to be excited about this,” Lisa said. “I’m just not sure if I should be.”

“Lisa, do you have any idea how much money a billion dollars is? I could write you a check for a million dollars, and by the end of the week, I’d earn that much back in interest or investments or whatever. It wouldn’t put a dent in my bank accounts. I didn’t do anything to earn it, it takes no effort on my part to manage, and I couldn’t spend it all if I tried.
